Long-term treatment of angina pectoris with dicumarol.

D URING the last few years reports have appeared of the favorable therapeutic effect of anticoagulants oni pain in cases of allgina pectoris. Heparin at first had its advocates, but later the possibility of reducing the severity and frequency of the anginal atta(ks through the use of this drug has )eeii seriously disputed.1 At l)resellt the use of Dicunnarol and allied dlrtigs is collsidered more promlising. Remarkably good results Iroil the protracted use of these drugs have been reported,3-7 and some authors have even found marked improvement after a few days of treatment.4 Most workers base their conclusions on persollal interviews or written questionnaires issued to the patients. These alnd some other nmethods for the evaluation of drug, effect oil cardiac paill have been severely criticized by Greiiner and associates,9 who emphasize the many fallacies, especially the influence of suggestion, amid the necessity of adequate control material. In the present study a small group of patielnts with angiina peetoris reCeiving alternately Dicumarol and a placebo has been followed for more than 2 years by the use of a tecliiic described by Greiiier and co-workers.'. The results do not support the claims of a beneficial effect of Dicuinarol on the algrillul pain. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our material comprises 10 normotensive inldividuals, 9 ien and 1 woman, suffering fromt arteriosclerotic heart disease and angina pectoris (table 1). Four of the subjects had previously suffered from acute nllvocardial infaretion with resulting typical and lasting electrocardiographie changes.
